What Are Options?

available options, choices for you, options available

What Are Options-Hello, Dinks. How many active investors do we have with us today? I know some of you deal with options on a weekly basis. Everyone doesn’t deal with them, though. A lot of people may not be entirely sure what they are. Today’s post is meant to help people get a better understanding of options.

According to Investopedia, an option is a contract that gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation to buy or sell an underlying asset at a particular price on or before a specified date. Several different types of options can be traded. The main two types are calls and puts. I will go over a few of them including calls and puts below.

Call

Call options are agreements that give the owner the right to buy the underlying assets in the future at an agreed price. Call options are usually used by investors for three primary purposes. They are used for tax management, income generation, and speculation.

Put

Put options are options that sell assets at an agreed price on or before a particular date. They are the opposite of calls.

American style

American style options can be either call or put options. American style options allow option holders to exercise the option at any time before and to include its maturity date. That will increase the value of the option.

European style

European style options can also be calls and puts as well. A European option can be exercised at the expiration date of the option. Those options sometimes trade at a discount.

Exchange traded option

An exchange traded option is an option traded on a regulated exchange where the terms of each option are standardized by the exchange. These types of options are also known as listed options.

Over the counter options

An over the counter option is an option traded off exchange as opposed to a listed stock option. The OTC option has a direct link between the buyer and seller. They have no secondary market and no expiration dates. They are less accessible to the general public.

Employee stock options

This is something that I’m finally familiar with on this list. Employee stock options are a form of stock option where employees are granted contracts based on the stock of the company they work for. A lot of businesses used these plans to compensate, retain and attract employees. In a previous job, I had a couple of stock options.

Cash settled options

Cash settled options are options are option contracts where the settlement is done with the payment of money equal to the difference between the market value and the contractual value of the underlier at the time of exercise or expiration.

Exotic options

The last option that I will be going over today is called an exotic option. It differs from the American or European options in terms of the underlying asset of the calculation of how or where the investor receives a certain payoff. A lot of exotic options are available from OTC markets.

Have you invested in options before?

Do You Watch Shark Tank?

shark tank, reality TV, watching TV

shark tankOne of the few shows that I watch on TV is Shark Tank. Shark Tank is a show where investors (Sharks) listen to entrepreneurs discuss their business or product. The entrepreneurs come to the show looking for an investment offer from one of the sharks.

Shark Tank has been on the air since 2009. The show features five sharks. They listen to several pitches from entrepreneurs on each episode. Below, is a list of the sharks and a little bit of information about each of them.

Robert Herjavec

Robert Herjavec is a Canadian businessman. He founded the Herjavec Group in 2003. The Herjavec Group is an IT security company. Herjavec is also a best-selling author.

Lori Greiner

Lori Greiner is an entrepreneur from Chicago, Illinois. She’s created over 500 products and she holds 120 US and international patents. She has been called “The Queen of QVC” She has had her own show on the network for the past 16 years.

Kevin O’Leary

Mr. Wonderful, as he often known as is a Canadian businessman, journalist, and investor. O’Leary has launched successful businesses such as an investment fund company called O’Leary Funds, O’Leary Fine Wines, and O’Leary Financial Group. Kevin O’Leary is probably the most straightforward shark on the show.

Daymond John

Daymond John is an entrepreneur from New York. He was one of the founders of the clothing company FUBU. Daymond John is also the author of three books, Display of Power, The Brand Within, and The Power of Broke.

Barbara Corcoran

Barbara Corcoran is a businesswoman from New Jersey. In 1973, she co-founded The Corcoran Group, which is New York’s largest real estate company. She sold her business is 2001 for $66 million.

Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban is a businessman from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is the owner of Landmark Theatres, Magnolia Pictures, and most notably the Dallas Mavericks.

As I stated earlier, Shark Tank has been on the air for seven seasons. It is the most watched show on Friday nights for people in the 18-49 age group.

Some products have become very successful after appearing on Shark Tank.

Simple Sugars is a company that makes all natural skin care products from non-genetically modified pure cane sugar and a blend of oils. In 2014, Simple Sugars bought in $3 million in revenue.

Cousins Maine Lobster is a high-end food truck business that is known for their lobster rolls. They made a deal with Corcoran in season 4. In 2014, they made $8 million.

Groovebook was a subscription based service that allows customers to receive a bound book of high-resolution photos taken from their phone. Shutterfly Inc. eventually purchased Groovebook for $14.5 million.

Scrub Daddy is a reusable super sponge that gets firm in cold water in soft in warm water. Over the past few years, Scrub Daddy has had over $75 million in sales.

Shark Tank is an excellent show. If you’re an entrepreneur, you can learn quite a bit from the sharks and the entrepreneurs. You get to see what may or may not work during a negotiation.

Have you ever watched Shark Tank? Who is your favorite shark?

Tips for Planning a Summer Road Trip

planning a road trip, vacation tips, travel tips

Planning a summer road tripHello, Dinks. I hope things are going well with you today. In today’s post, I want to share with you a few tips for planning a summer road trip. A lot of people including myself love to take road trips in the summer. The tips that you are about to read should help your planning go smoothly.

Where to go

The 1st thing that you need to do is decide where you want to go. It doesn’t matter if you go someplace that’s an hour away or someplace that’s 4 hours away, just make sure you pick a destination that you and your significant other will enjoy.

When to go

The next thing that you should think about is when you want to go. Depending on what part of the country you’re in the dates that you decide to plan your trip can make a huge difference. You may want to plan your road trip at the beginning of the summer before the weather becomes unbearable. You also should watch out for holiday weekends. The 4th of July and Labor Day are very popular holidays.  Highways and destinations are bound to be packed, so you should plan accordingly.

How long will the trip be

If you’re self-employed, your road trip can last for a few weeks with proper planning. Most people aren’t self-employed, so they only have a few days to make their journey. Weekend road trips are also an option.

To invite another couple or not

The next thing that you can decide is if you and your significant other wants to invite another couple to go on the trip with you. Having another couple can help you keep costs down, but it could make your trip less intimate.

Drive or rent

Something else that you want to decide is if you should drive your own car or get a rental. This decision depends on a few things such as the distance you’re driving, the condition of your vehicle and the type of car you have. Everyone’s decision will be different. For example, my vehicle is a nearly 20 years old, and it needs new tires. No way would I put it on the road for a 2-3 hour road trip. I would have to get a rental.

Hotel or friends

The sixth thing on the list is whether you want to stay in a hotel or with friends or family. If you don’t know anybody in the city that you’re visiting, you definitely have to get a room. If you happen to know someone in the area, your options may change. If you do decide to stay with someone, you can use the money that you will be saving on souvenirs.

Itinerary

The final thing that you should plan is an itinerary. The internet along with travel guides make planning an itinerary so much easier than it used to be. Some things that you can look for are historical sites, museums, sporting events and shopping locations.

Planning for a summer road trip doesn’t have to be complicated at all. It’s pretty easy once you take a little time to plan it.

Are you going on a summer road trip this year?

Kobe Bryant’s Net Worth and Lasting Impact

Kobe Bryant, Kobe Bryant net worth, Kobe Bryant's impact

Kobe Bryant'sNet WorthAnd Lasting ImpactKobe Bryant, one of the greatest professional basketball players of all time retired last week at the age of 37. He played all of his 20 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. Kobe Bryant is an 18 time NBA All-Star and a 5 time NBA champion. He was a beast on the court, so naturally he got paid pretty well during his career.

Bryant has earned $323 million in salary from the Lakers over the course of his career. This season alone he made $25 million! Besides his salary, he has also made over $280 million from endorsement deals. Some of those deals are listed below.

Nike

Kobe Bryant has been signed to Nike since 2003. His first deal was worth over $4o million for 4 years. He signed his most recent deal, a five-year contract in 2014. Kobe’s Nike shoes are the third best-selling signature shoe behind Lebron James and Kevin Durant.

McDonald’s

Kobe signed a $10 million deal with McDonald’s in 2001.

Sprite

Kobe made millions with Sprite from 1997-2005. He starred in several popular commercials for the company.

Lenovo

In 2013, the phone company Lenovo tapped Kobe to sponsor an Android phone called the Lenovo K900.

Adidas

Kobe Bryant signed with Adidas straight out of high school in 1996. He stayed with them until the summer of 2002. The contract was worth $48 million.

Hublot

The next company that Bryant endorsed was Hublot. Hublot is a Swiss watch brand that sells luxury watches. Their watches sell for an average of $20,000 – $30,000.

Mercedes-Benz

In 2011, Kobe signed a three-year deal with Mercedes-Benz. He helped promote the Smart Microcar to people in China.

Turkish Airlines

Kobe Bryant signed a deal with Turkish Airlines in 2010. He has been featured in several commercials and print advertisement.

Now that his playing career is over you may think Kobe will just enjoy retirement by playing golf and hitting the beach. Wrong, Kobe already has his hands in a few business opportunities.

In 2013, while injured, Kobe started a company called Kobe Inc. Kobe Inc. was created to grow brands that challenge and redefine the sports industry.

Kobe has also invested in the sports drink BODYARMOR. BODYARMOR has coconut water in it. It also claims to deliver more potassium to an athlete’s body while offering less sodium. Kobe is also the third largest shareholder behind the founders of the company.

Kobe Bryant has also invested in The Players Tribune, which is an athlete driven website founded by New York Yankees great Derek Jeter.

As you can see Kobe Bryant has made a lot of money from playing with the Los Angeles Lakers and through his numerous endorsements. His skills have allowed him to be a very marketable player over the years. Now that he is retired he plans to grow his net worth of $320 million even higher. The business ventures that I mentioned earlier are probably just the beginning for Kobe. It will be interesting to see how everything plays out.

Do you think Kobe Bryant has what it takes to be the next Magic Johnson? Did any of his endorsement deals surprise you?

How to Generate More Income

side hustle, extra income, generate more income

How to Generate More IncomeHello, Dinks. I hope everyone had a good week. If you’re a last minute person, you still have three days to file your taxes. If you find out that you owe, you may need to find a way to pay that bill. In today’s post, I will be talking about how to generate more income. There are tips that everyone can do, but for some reason, everyone doesn’t.

Believe

The first thing that you need to do is believe that it can be done. I know people that say they want to generate more income, but they don’t believe that. You have to have the right mindset for certain things to happen in your life. If you don’t believe that you can make more money, you never will, but if you believe that you can, the opportunities can be endless.

Focus

Now that you believe that it can be done, you now have to focus. You may be asking yourself what should you focus on. You should focus on things that you like and things that can help you generate extra income. Do you have any skills that you can monetize? Are you creative? Do you like talking to people? Those are just a few things to consider. Once you find something that you think will make money you should proceed to the next step.

Prepare to sacrifice

Every successful person has had to do some type of sacrifice before. If you want to generate more income, you must be willing to sacrifice. Hanging with friends less, getting up earlier, and watching less TV are just a few things that you may have to sacrifice. I’m am not going to lie and tell you that it will be easy because it’s not. Just remember, sacrifices aren’t permanent. You just need to do it until you are generating more income. Once you are making more, you can start back doing some of the things you used to do.

Set a goal

Setting a goal will help you get to your mark quicker. For example, you may have a goal to generate an extra $5000 by June. If you do the math, you would be able to see how much extra money you need to make each week. Then you could plan on doing what you need to do to get you there. Setting a goal is very crucial to knowing what you want.

Do it

The final thing left is to do it. Put your plan into action and start generating that extra money. You may be nervous starting off, but that’s natural. Whether it’s a side hustle or a part time job you have to be ready to make it happen. Once you start, you will generate more money in due time.

In review, the ways to generate more income is to believe that you can, focus on what you can do to make more, prepare to sacrifice, set a goal and do it. As  I stated earlier, anyone can do this. It just depends on if you really want to generate more income or not.

Which one of these were the hardest for you?

Last Minute Tax Tips

tax tips, tax advice, tax season

last minGood Morning Dinks. It’s down to the wire for those who haven’t done their taxes yet. The usual deadline to file them is April 15th. This year, the IRS is giving you until April 18th to file. For my last minute crowd, those extra three days should come in handy. Luckily, I filed my taxes in February, so it’s one less thing that I have to worry about. Today, I will share some last minute tips that should help you when you file this week.

Get organized

If you’re not already organized, you need to take some time today or tomorrow and do it. You need to gather forms that you need such as your W-2, 1098 – E and Form 1098 if you have a mortgage. If you’re married, you also need to decide if you are going to file jointly or married filing separately. Just remember if you choose to file a separate return from your spouse, you will be disqualified from receiving several tax deductions.

Review last year’s tax return

Going over last year’s return may help to jog your memory. Unless you had a major change in your life, your old tax return might help to remind you of similar deductions that you can claim for this year. I’ve been doing my own for the last two years. Reviewing my previous year’s return has helped me remember to include a few things.

Free Tax Help

If you make under $54,000, the IRS has free tax return help centers set up all over the country to help people file if they need it. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return prep. The program which is called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) has sites located at community centers, schools, libraries, and other convenient locations.

Use legit tax programs or preparers

When filing your taxes, you should use a legitimate tax program or preparer. During the last two years, I’ve used Turbo Tax. At the time, I didn’t know much about taxes, but I didn’t have a problem. Turbo Tax was very easy to use, and each page had instructions that anyone can follow. When it comes to tax preparers, you want to make sure you choose a legit company. Companies like H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt have the reputation for getting customers taken care of. Your friend who just started doing taxes on the side in January may not. It’s best always to research before you choose a preparer.

Watch out for scams

There are some bad people in this world. Criminals try to file fraudulent returns using other people’s social security numbers. That’s not cool. You have to be very careful with your sensitive information. You also need to watch out for fake emails or sites that are looking to steal your information.

Don’t forget to include extra money

Did you win big money on the slots in Las Vegas? Did you appear on a game show like The Price is Right and win? If something similar happened to you, please don’t forget to include that info on your taxes. The IRS knows about it, and they will want their cut.

File an extension

If you don’t think you’ll be able to do everything by the 18th, file an extension. Doing so gives you a few more months to get everything together.

Be prepared

In the case that you owe money to the IRS, have a plan on how you’re going to pay them. A popular option is to set up an installment agreement. You set that up by filling out Form 9465. That can be done if you owe less than $50,000. Other ways that you can pay your taxes is to use a credit card or to tap into your 401k. I wouldn’t do those last two options.

The Top 10 Most Valuable MLB Teams

baseball league, major baseball, sports

The Top 10 Most Valuable MLB TeamsHello, Dinks. The Major League Baseball season officially kicked off last week. Baseball is big business. Today, I will share with you the ten most valuable MLB teams according to Forbes.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are Major League Baseball’s most valuable team. They are currently valued at $3.4 billion dollars. The Yankees had $516 million in revenue last season. Their average ticket price is $64.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the next team on the list. They are valued at $2.5 billion. The Dodgers made $438 million in revenue last season. Their average ticket price is $31.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are valued at $2.3 billion. Even with a last-place finish last season, the Red Sox still managed to generate a lot of revenue. They made $398 million last season. Their average ticket price is $56.

San Francisco Giants

The San Francisco Giants are the 4th most valuable team. They are valued at $2.25 billion. They made $409 million in revenue in 2015. With it being an even year, the Giants may be poised to make another run at the World Series. They’ve won it in 2010, 2012, and 2014. All three of those were even years, so you can’t count them out. Their average ticket price is $41.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are the next team on the list. The “lovable losers” as the Cubs have been called over the years are not losers when it comes to team valuation. They are valued at $2.2 billion. The Cubs made $340 million in revenue in 2015. Their average ticket price is $50. In my opinion, the price is worth it. Wrigley Field is awesome.

New York Mets

The New York Mets are valued at $1.65 billion. Their revenue was $317 million last season. They look to increase that amount coming off a World Series appearance. Their average ticket price is $25.

St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals are the 7th most valuable MLB team. They are valued at $1.16 million. Last season, they made $300 million in revenue. The Cardinals play in a stacked National League Central division with the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The race between those three teams will be exciting all season. If you plan on catching a Cardinals game, their average ticket price is $36.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are worth $1.34 billion. They have arguably the best player in the game in Outfielder Mike Trout. The Angels made $312 million last season in revenue. Their average ticket price is $28.

Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals are worth $1.3 billion. They made $293 million last season in revenue. Their average ticket price is $35. That’s not too much to pay to see last season’s MVP, Bryce Harper in action.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies round out the list of top 10 valued MLB teams. They are the third National League East division team on the list. They are valued at $1.235 billion. Even though they won just 63 games last season, they still made $263 million in revenue. Their average ticket price is $37.

My Atlanta Braves didn’t make the top 10 list. I would say that I’m shocked, but they are in full rebuilding load. People don’t want to pay to see a team get beat every night.

Did your favorite team make the list?

Tips From Warren Buffett

stock market tips, Warren Buffett tips, learn from Warren Buffett

Tips From Warren BuffettWarren Buffett is the most successful investor in the world. He is the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. His net worth is over $66 billion. Buffett is a very smart man, to say the least. Today, I will share several money and life tips from him.

Learn about money

The first tip from Warren Buffett is critical. If you don’t take the time to learn about money, it will control you instead of you controlling it. Multiple books and websites cover the topic of money in some form. There is no reason for anyone not to be able to learn about it.

Invest in yourself

Warren Buffett once stated that investing in yourself is the best thing that you can do. He also states that anything you can do to improve your talents will pay off for you in due time.  He’s 100% correct. Investing in yourself may mean reading more, going to conferences, or even going back to school.  If you want to be successful, investing in yourself is something that you must do.

Never lose money

This rule can apply to multiple situations, but in this instance, it’s about investing. Everyone who has invested has lost money before. The trick is to try not to lose anymore. That may be hard, so you want to keep those losses at a minimum.

Be nice to people

This tip is easy to do, but some people fail to follow it. Some people are just mean for no reason. You don’t have to be like that to be a success. Being nice to people may even help you stand out.

Watch small expenses

The next tip is to watch your small expenses. If you don’t pay attention they can quickly add up. Paying attention to every expense whether it’s personal or business-related can make your paycheck and profits go further.

Avoid credit card debt

Warren Buffett is not a fan of credit card debt at all. He doesn’t like the high-interest rates that many credit cards have. He even suggests that young people shouldn’t use them.

Take care of your mind and body

Buffett once told a group of students “you only get one mind and one body. It has to last a lifetime.” My interpretation of that quote is that you need always take care of yourself. People should pay attention to what they are eating and drinking. They should also pay attention to what they are reading and listening to. He also told the students that what they do today will determine how their minds and body would operate years from now. That makes me realize that I need to do better myself.

Give back

Buffett has made an effort to give back to people. In the past, he has given money to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Girls Inc., which is a nonprofit organization that focuses on giving confidence to girls.

Be willing to be different

The crowd is not always right. You have to make decisions in life that work for you and nobody else. Buffett chose to work in Omaha, Nebraska instead of in New York City on Wall Street. Years later we can see that his decision worked out just fine. Being different is ok.

Successful Yard Sale Tips

yard sale tips, garage sale tips, yard sale advice

yard saleYard sales are an easy way to bring in some extra money. With the weather warming up, this is the perfect time for you to plan and have one. Below are some tips that should help you have a successful yard sale.

Check for rules

You should see if your city or neighborhood association has any rules regarding yard sales. Some places require that you have a permit. Others may have similar restrictions. Before you have your sale, check with the city officials.

Promote

The next thing that you need to do is to promote your yard sale. The more people that know about it likely means that more people will show up. Make sure you post signs up around the neighborhood. Also, advertise your yard sale on Craigslist. Finally, you can promote it on your social media accounts like Facebook.

Set Up

You should decide how you want to set up your items. Organization is key. You may want to have similar items together, or you may want to spread things out. Whatever you decide to do make sure that the setup is right for you and your potential customers.

Have change

This tip should be common sense, but you’d be surprised at how many yard sales I’ve been to and saw that the person running it didn’t have enough change. It’s a pain for you or your customers to have to go to a store for some change. A lot of customers wouldn’t come back to your yard sale if they had to do that. When I had my sale a few years ago, I made sure that I had one hundred dollar bills and fifty dollars worth of fives.

Help

You should make sure that you have someone to assist you with your yard sale. It can be very tiresome if you try to do everything by yourself. Imagine setting the yard sale up, selling things for hours, and then have to clean up by yourself. You would be exhausted. You should ask your significant other or a friend to help you out.

Set the mood

Make sure that you set a nice mood for your yard sale. It could get more people to stop when passing by. Setting up balloons and colorful signs is one thing you can do. Having some nice, edited music will also be good.

Don’t overprice

I know that you want to make some decent money off of your items, but don’t overprice them. The purpose of your yard sale is to sell your items. The worst thing that could happen is that you don’t make one sale because of your prices being too high.  Not only would you not make any money, but you would have also wasted a Saturday morning.

Bags

The final tip to help you have a successful yard sale is to make sure that you have some plastic bags. The plastic bags will be for the customers. They will need something to put their items in once they buy them from you.

Have you ever had a yard sale? Are there any tips that I missed?
