The Pearl Carpet of Baroda is perhaps the worlds most valuable carpet. Valued at over $5,000,000 the carpet is made of entirely of jewels. Its constructed from hundreds of rubies, diamonds, sapphires and an over estimated 2,000,000 Basra pearls.
In the early 1860’s, Maharaja Khande Rao of Baroda, who was really, really rich, became possessed with a strange desire, that he must offer a priceless pearl carpet at the shrine of Prophet Mohammad in Medina – this is funny, seeing as he was Hindu. The Maharaja had his men make the carpet, but died before he could present it to the Prophet.
If you want to finish the job for him, the carpet goes on sale on March 19th at Sothebys.
