So, after tallying up our August net worth, our wealth declined by about $26,000 thousand dollars. This was primarily due to our wedding and honeymoon expenses. We spent approximatly $22,000 on our wedding and $5,000 on the honeymoon. Additionally, our holdings in the Hansens Natural Corporation declined by about 12 percent (we’ve since sold the majority of our stock in the company). These was partly offset by the cash value of our wedding gifts (we figure we received about fifty cents in gifts for each dollar we spent on the wedding).

All in all, we are down by a substantal amount. Ouch.

Our figures for August are below.

MANAGE YOUR MONEY TOGETHER

Here are some simple guidelines for DINKS to build wealth:

1) Collaborate: Meet regularly to talk about money, set goals together, track and monitor them.

2) Understand and respect your partner. Take time to understand your partners values about money.

3) Watch the numbers. Get a budget, monitor your spending and track your net worth.

4) Max your retirement. Maximize contributions to your tax deferred retirement accounts.

5) Invest in stock. Stocks perform better than bonds or cash.

6) Avoid high interest debt. Credit cards and title loans are financial cancer.

7) Diversify. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
