Everyone is looking for ways to relax and unwind during this stressful time. Unfortunately, your monthly budget won’t grow any bigger just because you want it to.
The good news is that there are many different ways you can give yourself some well-needed self-care without splurging or making a major investment. Here are five cheap ways you can treat yourself right now without having to move your money around.
Take up journaling
Journaling means something different to different people. Consider what would make you feel the most relaxed and comfortable with your journal. Do you prefer self-reflection or drawing? Do you prefer to use your journal to keep track of things like a bullet journal?
Feel free to have fun and express yourself. You can either buy a journal online or use a journal or sketchbook you already own. You don’t need to have a fresh, new journal to get the same benefits.
Walk around your neighborhood
You may not be able to travel like you used to prior to the COVID-19 crisis, but that doesn’t mean you can’t walk around your neighborhood. Slip your mask on and wear some good walking shoes. Walk up and down your street or around your neighborhood. Movement gets the brain going and it helps to release chemicals in your brain that are important for mood regulation, stress relief, and focus.
Wash your face
It’s amazing what washing your face can do for your mood. Even the simple act of splashing water on your face can help you feel refreshed. Consider washing your face with a gentle cleanser at least once a day and applying moisturizer afterward. Wash and replace your pillowcases, too, at least once a week to prevent bacteria and oils from clogging your skin.
Brush and floss your teeth
According to Jonathan Van Ness, self-care extraordinaire, if you don’t have the energy to do anything else, make sure to brush your teeth. About 80% of Americans aged 18 to 49 want whiter teeth, and brushing your teeth is a simple way to take care of yourself. Brushing regularly helps to keep bacteria and plaque at bay, which can build up and turn into tartar and cavities. Make sure to floss, too, to help reduce the risk of gingivitis.
Dye your hair a fun color
If you’ve been wanting to experiment with your hair, now is the time to do it. About 70% of women in the U.S. say they use hair coloring products like boxed color, and it isn’t too difficult to figure out how to dye your hair at home. The best part is that you can always dye your hair a different color again afterward if it turns out bright blue just isn’t for you.
You don’t need to buy an expensive yoga mat or essential oils to get the benefits of self-care. There are plenty of budget-friendly ways you can treat yourself. Try one of the ideas above the next time you feel yourself getting stressed or anxious.
