Weekly Roundup: $500 giveaway, planning for the future and financial advice

Good morning Dinks and happy Friday. I hope you all had a nice 4^th of July weekend last week. Nick and I had a great vacation in Niagara Falls and if you read Dinks Finance earlier this week you know all about it.

How did you spend the 4^th of July? Some couples spend all of their vacations the same way – with family and friends. But the 4^th of July isn’t like any old holiday…it’s full of good barbeque food and lots and lots of fireworks. If you are lucky there may also be a parade involved in your long weekend.

I also love the 4^th of July weekend (or July 1^st in Canada) because in my opinion it officially kicks of the summer season of warm weather, vacations and lots and lots of fun.

Here are some simple guidelines for DINKS to build wealth:

1) Collaborate: Meet regularly to talk about money, set goals together, track and monitor them.

2) Understand and respect your partner. Take time to understand your partners values about money.

3) Watch the numbers. Get a budget, monitor your spending and track your net worth.

4) Max your retirement. Maximize contributions to your tax deferred retirement accounts.

5) Invest in stock. Stocks perform better than bonds or cash.

6) Avoid high interest debt. Credit cards and title loans are financial cancer.

7) Diversify. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I love heading to the cabin during the summer. There’s just something about sitting on a boat on the lake with a cold beer in hand. Tough to beat, in my opinion.

@Grayson – sometimes doing nothing is just as good.
@Jake – honestly I am not a huge fan of the woods because it combines by two biggest fears…total silence and total darkness. However the picture perfect image of a cabin on the lake seems really nice.

Firstly we had a lovely seafood buffet on the 4th of July…it was stunning!
I loved the article about modest money and planning for the future. I see so many people who don’t have much money, and because of this, don’t plan. This is sad because with some planning they could take control of their finances and live a comfortable life.
So thanks for touching on this topic.
