Are there gender roles in your house?

gender roles, gender stereotyping, sexism

Good morning Dinks. Something happened this week at my office and I was absolutely surprised by my co workers reaction to gender roles in 2013. I would like to share with you because I am not sure if it’s just my relationship that is completely out of the ordinary or if my co worker is just old fashioned.

My team and I were looking at photos to use of one of our upcoming presentations and we chose a photo of a man handing the woman a set of keys.  My co worker liked the idea of the photo but she said that we should find a photo where the woman is giving the man a set of keys. Even after she saw the shocked look on all of our faces around the table she continued to defend her point saying that a man would never give a woman keys because the man should always drive.

Is it just me or is she totally crazy and living in the 1940s? I know that some relationships still maintain gender roles such as housewives, the man being the sole breadwinner and women at home cooking and cleaning.  I am definitely not a feminist and I honestly do believe that women and men still maintain gender roles, not because we are of a certain sex, but because men just do some things better than we do.

In my relationship I take care of our laundry, not because I am female, but because I love doing laundry. I know it’s weird but I like the smell of fabric softener. My boyfriend Nick takes care of a lot of the repairs around our apartment, not because he is the man of the house, but because he is the only one that is tall enough to reach and change a light bulb. I am only 5 feet tall and he is 6,2”.

Do you and your spouse play into your gender roles?

Who is the personal banker in your house? Maybe the woman manages the money in your house, maybe the man does or maybe you each manage your money separately.  When it comes to money I find that it’s best not to put pressure on anyone and let the person who wants to take responsibility manage the money.  Sometimes the pressure of managing money, especially if you don’t want to, can be more than one person can handle.  Stress leads to disagreements and arguing leads to break ups so be open about money and talk about your couple’s finances with your spouse.

Who is the master chef in your household? When I was growing up it was always my father who cooked for our family.  To this day I am not quite sure that my mother has mastered her skills in the kitchen.  I believe that the days of a woman having dinner ready on the table at 6 pm when her husband gets home from work are over, but maybe I’m wrong.

Who is the tie breaker in your house? If you have one opinion and your spouse has another opinion, who makes the final decision? Maybe it’s the man, maybe it’s the woman or maybe the person who really wants the decision to be made.

Rub the Dinks Genie in a Bottle and Get 3 Wishes

wishes, dreams, dinks

Good morning Dinks. What if all your dreams could come true in the next 15 minutes – would you love that? More importantly, would you take the opportunity? I know that I am working towards goals in my life and I am going to love the sense of accomplishment that I will have when I achieve all of my personal goals.  I am not sure if I would like to have all of my dreams come true over night because afterwards what would I be working towards?  But just for the sake of fun let’s pretend.

If you could have three wishes come true right now what would they be?

Did you wish for money?

If you wished for money, why? Maybe it’s because you think that money will honestly make you happy, maybe it’s because you want to pay off your debt or maybe you wished for money because it will give you the financial freedom to stop working your 9 to 5 and start doing what you really want to do in life.

Did you wish to be successful at your own job?

Think about that for a minute, what do you really want in life – if you could have anything right now what would it be? Some of us like the security of having a 9 to 5 with a company so maybe your wish is to be successful at your job. But others of us have dreams of being self employed, building our own business and waking up every morning to do something we love.  If money wasn’t a factor, would you be self employed?

Did you wish to live a long healthy life?

Some of us may have wished to live a long healthy life.  I personally hope to be healthy long enough to do all the things I want to and visit all the places I want to go.  I also hope to have the money to do so.  Some people may think that being healthy is more important than money, but what’s the benefit of being healthy if you don’t have the money to enjoy your life? I definitely hope not to suffer from an illness in my life and at the same time I hope to be healthy long enough to travel all throughout my life.

Did you wish for someone else?

Maybe someone you know is going through a tough time right now and maybe you wished for something good to happen to someone you know.  It’s hard to see family suffer through emotional, financial or physical problems. It can make you feel good and relieve stress to help out a loved one with one of your wishes.

OK Dinks so tell us- if you could have three wishes come true right now what would they be?

Here are my three wishes:

1. To be a successful author, quit my 9 to 5 and write books or work in publishing for a living.

2. To spend 6 months of the year, aka the cold months, in a warm European climate preferably in Portugal or Spain. However I don’t want to be picky, I will take a nice little house on a tropical Caribbean island too.

3. Third wish to be determined…maybe get married?

Are Dinks saving or spending? Take a guess.

dinks, saving money, spending money

Good morning Dinks. Today we are discussing our disposable income, or in some cases our not so disposable income. Sometimes peoples spending and savings habits are directly related to their income and sometimes peoples financial habits are related to an emotional or mental state. Have you ever made a purchase just because you were in the mood to spend money? Let me ask you another question, have you ever not purchased something that you really wanted just because you couldn’t bring yourself to spend money and watch your account balances go down?

I am sure that we have all been there – on both sides of the spending and saving fence. We are Dinks, we are dual income households with less necessary expenses than the average family because we don’t have kids. This theory tells us that we should have a high disposable income and therefore we should be saving like crazy.  Or, maybe

So which one is it – are Dinks spenders or savers – what do you think?

According to our friends at Save Up young adults (ages 22 to 32 years old) are keeping money in their savings accounts and paying down 57% more student loan debt than previous generations such as Gen X or Baby Boomers.

Did we learn from our parents mistakes or are we paranoid?

Young adults and recent college grads may be lower wage earners than more experienced employees in their 40s and 50s who are more established in their careers. However, we are saving more than the older generations and we are paying off our debt at the same time.  Save Up reports that “young adults are taking a balanced approach to managing their finances.

Maybe you learned to be financially responsible from watching your parents make mistakes with money when you were younger, maybe you had no choice but to become a financially responsible young adult because it was embedded into your brain as a child or maybe you have experience the recent market crash first hand and you are reluctant to spend money because you don’t want to live through a period of uncertainty again.

The best financial advice from a younger generation

If you told my parents that I could team them a thing or two about money they would probably laugh in your face because older generations rarely feel that they can learn anything from the generations that came after them, but according to SaveUp this is just not true.

Despite possible lower incomes young adults are more responsible with their money. We find a perfect balance between paying off debt and saving. As a financial planner when I ask my clients why they aren’t saving they say it’s because they are paying off debt. But the truth is that you can do both.

If we live on less and try not to have it all then our budget can afford to pay off debt and save money at the same time. Very often I see people rack up debt and then use their savings to pay it off but that is an unnecessary and to be honest, a bad financial habit. If you are deciding whether to pay off your debt or save money – don’t make a choice, you can do both!

A little motivation for your financial goals

motivation, financial goals, saving

Good morning Dinks. Today we are discussing our financial goals and how we are working towards achieving them.  I say financial goals because the truth is that people most likely have personal goals such as travelling, finding a better job, changing careers etc. but all of those personal goals have a financial undertone.

I am always intrigued to hear other people’s financial goals. As a financial planner I always ask my clients what are you working towards, what are you saving for and what do you want to do over the next year. I like to know because it helps me be a better financial planner. When you set your personal goals you can determine your financial priorities, financial priorities help us set our budget and our budget is the base to good financial habits.

What keeps your motivated to continue working towards your goals?

I love setting goals because achieving a task always makes me feel proud.  I always like achieving my goal because there is always something great in it for me such as a vacation etc.  People set goals because they want to change something in their life, but the reasons that keep us motivated are different for everyone.

– Tracking your progress with a budget and goals tracker.  Some people like to see their progress towards achieving their goal. As that red bar turns green and you work towards achieving your personal and financial goals it can be very empowering.  People often say this about weight loss, the first five pounds are hard to loose, but after that you have adjusted to your new lifestyle and it’s smooth sailing from there. Does tracking your progress keep you motivated towards achieving your goals?

– Earning rewards on your savings account.  Some of us need a little incentive to work towards our goals.  For some people the end result, aka the prize that you are working towards, can sometimes be incentive enough but for some others they need a little more encouragement along the way.  Companies like Save Up reward clients for their good spending habits. Each and every time you don’t spend money or deposit money into your savings account you will earn credits. You can then use those credits to play Save Up games and have the chance to win great prizes such as gift cards and cash money. Do you need some savings encouragement with rewards?

– Healthy competition with your friends and family.  Maybe you like working towards and achieving your personal goals because you want to be equal to or better than your family and friends. Do you often talk about money with your family and friends? If you do then maybe you also discuss your latest purchases, your next planned vacation and the square footage of your home.  This is not my style, but it used to be.  As I became financially responsible I learned that I don’t have to keep up with the Jones’.  All I have to do is be happy and healthy because that is what really makes us rich.

Weekly roundup: Fast and Furious, The Hangover and Memorial Day

Good morning and happy Friday Dinks.  As I write to you this morning I can hardly contain my excitement because today two totally amazing movies are being released and I don’t know which one to go see first. In a mere few hours I will be off work and ready to go to the movies to see either the new Fast and Furious movie or the new Hangover movie. Which one should I see first?

Action movies are my favourite type of movie, but then again, I also love a really good cry until you can’t breathe comedy, aka The Hangover 3.

It’s Memorial Day weekend in the United States so if you aren’t busy bar-b-q-ing you may have time to go see a movie.

I am definitely going to see both movies but I don’t know which one to see first. Let’s take a Dinks vote…

Which movie should I go and see first – Fast & Furious 6 or The Hangover Part 3?

While you are voting enjoy these great posts from our personal finance friends.

Reader Confessions: I don’t know how much money I spent

spending, debt, money temptation

Good morning Dinks. We all try to track our income and expenses, we try to live within a budget and we save for our future. But let me ask you a question – do you really know how much money you are spending and saving. If I asked you what percentage of your income you spend on food every month and you had to answer this question right now would you know?

LearnVest and Chase Blueprint recently published an article where 8 readers share their secrets to not spending.  I honestly believe that temptation is a big part of spending; it’s also a big reason why people get into debt. If we avoid temptation and don’t want things then we will be less likely to spend money unnecessarily.

What is the last unnecessary item that you purchased?

Use these tips to help you stop spending:

1. Leave your wallet at home.  This is the best savings tip that I have ever heard.  If our wallet holds our money and our credit cards and we leave our wallet at home then we can’t spend any money.  Next time you go for coffee with friends or go for a walk, put $5 in your pocket and leave your wallet with credit cards and cash at home.

2. Rename your accounts.  If you associate your accounts with specific goals such as vacation fund, housing costs and retirement savings you will be less likely to use that money for miscellaneous spending.  Rename your accounts for your personal and couples goals and you will avoid spending money carelessly.

3. Treat shopping as a scouting mission.  Always get at least three quotes.  Don’t shop just to buy something, shop to get the best deal on items that you need.  Shopping around, checking weekly flyers and searching online for the best price will help you save money while shopping and avoid impulse purchases. For some of us it’s not spending money that is the most important part of shopping, sometimes it’s just fun to spend the day out with friends…even if we don’t buy something.

4. Consider your cost per hour.  This helps determine if your purchase cost is really worth the price. I don’t mind spending a lot of money on a really warm winter jacket or a good pair of winter boots because I know that I will have them for many years. Over time the lump sum cost will average out to be worth it.

5. Adopt the one in one out rule.  If you buy something new you should get rid of the old item that it is replacing, otherwise you will just be a hoarder.  If you can’t part with your old items then you won’t buy new items.

6. Keep a running tally on your phone. Tracking your daily spending and monthly budget through your cell phone helps you keep a running tab on how much you spend.  Checking your bank accounts once a day from your home computer is good but checking your account balances several times throughout the day is a great idea.

7. Avoid buying on the spot.  I think we can all agree that impulse purchases are killer to our budgets. Avoid them at all costs. I like to use the three day rule, if you still want an item in three days then you can buy it. Waiting three days before buying your items also gives you time to shop around for the best deal.

8. Unsubscribe from retailers.  Temptation is brutal when it comes to spending.  I used to receive several emails per day telling me about discounts, free gift with purchases and store sales. I unsubscribed from all emails and now I avoid the shopping temptation by avoiding deal emails from stores.

What is your trick to cut spending?

How I went to NYC for only $400

traveling, budget travel, NYC trip

go to NYC cheap

Good morning Dinks.  I just got back from a weekend getaway to New York City and I had a great time.  I love New York so much and I always have a great time when I visit the city.  This time I had a really great trip in New York City, I had a wonderful day at an event and I got an amazing deal on my whole trip, so that makes the entire weekend a little bit better – don`t you agree?

Getting a good deal on an already great vacation makes the trip even better. I like to share my life experiences, both good and bad, so I am going to let you know how I spent the weekend in NYC for only $400.

Save money on your next vacation with these three tips:

Look for cheap ways to travel

The reality of our world is that the cheapest way to travel is not always the most convenient way to travel; you may have to travel a little longer or a day earlier in order to save a little bit of money.  Before you take your next trip try to research the cheapest way to get to where you want to be. Check bus, train and flight schedules to find the cheapest way to travel that fits into your schedule.  You can also check with your friends to see if they can travel with you or if you can car pool. Less money that you spend on travel is more money that you can spend on other experiences while on vacation. I took the bus to NYC and it only cost $124 round trip.

Find a deal on your hotel room

There is a fine line between finding a good deal on a hotel room and putting yourself in danger.  I usually travel alone so being safe is a big factor for me when I take a vacation.  However, I also don’t want to be sleeping in a room full of bugs, so I try to find a really good deal on a four star hotel room in a semi-safe neighbourhood.

How do I do it? I use discount websites to book my travel accommodations.  I love booking my vacations with Priceline because if you don’t find a hotel room at the price you want you can always name your own price.  I booked my weekend stay in NYC for only $345 through Priceline.

Another option you have is to use a place like Air BNB where you can rent a room for cheap.

Discover ways to have fun for cheap

I love to spend money on experiences in new cities. I like to eat the food, shop at local stores and buy things that I can’t find where I live and I really like to attend events and conferences because I get to try new products and meet new people.

During my weekend trip to NYC I went to SELF Workout in the Park. It is a full day event of fitness classes from Crunch Gym.  I have never actually exercised outside and I have to say that I loved it. There is something about being outside in the fresh air while working out that makes the whole experience that much better. I spent the day in Central Park, tried out new workout classes and got lots and lots of swag for only $20.  I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a day.

Many local attractions and museums offer discount prices on certain days of the week, some even have periods of free admission.  If you plan to visit a local attraction while on your next vacation check out their website first or other discount websites – I like Broadway Box Office –   before you buy your tickets.

How do you save money when traveling?

Make sure your wishes come true: Best Bequest Giveaway

Good morning Dinks. We are all working hard, living on less, watching our budget and saving money – but let me ask you a question, what are you saving for? This week I discovered that one of my co-workers – who is married with three kids – does not have a Last Will and Testament.  He has a house and a family but he doesn’t have a Will in case something happens to him or his wife. As a financial planner I told him that he should have a Will to make sure that his last wishes are followed and his response was “having a Will is bad luck”.

Making final plans is good financial sense

I don’t think that having a Last Will and Testament is bad luck; actually it’s a smart financial strategy to ensure that all of your hard earned money is disbursed according to your wishes. When you think about it, not having a Will isn’t bad luck – it’s a really bad idea.

I tried to explain to my co-worker that having a Will can take care of his family if something bad happens to him.  My co-workers response was why do you have a Will? You don’t even have kids. That is true, I don’t have kids – but that doesn’t mean that I don’t have a family. Kids or no kids my boyfriend and I still have final wishes.

Where do you keep your Will?

Some of us go the traditional route and visit our Notary to create a Will. Some of us write our own Will on a pen and paper and some of us are moving into the digital age with an electronic record of our personal information.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have all of your assets in one place along with permissions to your accounts and other legacy information, just in case something bad happens? Allow me to introduce BestBequest.com.

Best Bequest is the world’s first digital legacy vault. It’s a website that allows you to safely store personal documents, pictures, videos and more. BestBequest.com allows you to determine who has access to your digital assets, including social media and email accounts, especially after any life-altering events. If something bad should ever happen to you or your spouse it’s important to make sure that your personal information is safe and that your last wishes are carried out.

Best Bequest can help you and your spouse prepare for any life-changing events if one of you should get sick or pass away.  BestBequest.com is easy to use – it’s like using online budgeting software, but instead of tracking your spending you are organizing your personal, legal and financial life.

In an age when we are all moving towards digitally storing our personal information leaving a virtual legacy with Best Bequest is a safe and sound idea.  If ever you have a flood or fire you don’t have to worry about your information being lost or damaged, it will all be safely stored online. Now doesn’t that sound like a service you want to have?!

Time for the Best Bequest Giveaway – that’s a $150 value

Use the Rafflecopter link below to enter.  You can win a bronze membership to BestBequest.com – that’s $150 value – and get your finances (and your life) in order.

Good luck to everyone who enters. The winner will be announced next Monday.

Weekly Roundup: Giveaways, Flashdrives and Sweatpants

Good morning Dinks and happy Friday. Well, I am back from my weekend in New York City and I have been for almost a week. I have to say that I am still a little bit sad. I love New York City so much and I always get a little bit sad every time I come home. That’s why I try to hang out in NYC as often as my schedule – and bank account – permit.

Do you have a favourite city?

Today is the start of a long weekend up here in Canada and I am so excited. Having an extra day off in the week makes a huge difference in my life, in my attitude, in my sleep and of course in my relationship.

I love having an extra full day to spend with my boyfriend Nick. Of course we do have the weekends together but having that extra one day off lets us just sleep in and spend the day doing whatever we want – usually we spend it in our pjs. A long weekend is an extra day to spend together, without having to run errands and without watching sports all day – which is how my boyfriend usually spends his Sundays.

A long weekend is also a great way to take a weekend road trip.  Once again an extra free day is just enough time to get in the car and drive to your favourite closest city.

What is your favourite way to spend a long weekend?
