Change Matters

You can tell we had an exciting weekend when our big outing was going to the bank to deposit our jar of change! We filled our depository to near overflowing. We knew it was time to deposit it when our cats were beginning to push off the change in the morning to make noise and wake us up!

So we triple bagged the change and headed down to the bank. True, the bag was heavy, but it didn’t appear to be that substantial. Just before we dumped in the change we wagered a bet as to how much money was there.

In the end both our estimates were far off. James guessed $45 and Miel $50. In the end it was a whopping $85.80! Looks like we’ve got more change than we expected!

Enjoy your Monday! We’ll be busy studying and contemplating change!

Development in Macedonia – Your Tax $ Hard at Work

By request from one of our regular readers, I thought I’d share a bit about the projects that I’m working on in Macedonia. I generally try to keep work and blogging separate, but I’ll make sure not to share any state secrets.

There are two projects that I worked on while in Macedonia, both are implemented by the Academy for Educational Development and funded by USAID and brought to you by the American people.

The main purpose for my most recent trip was to start up the Primary Education Project. It is a five year project with $16M in funding and another $4M in cost share (added value we bring to the project by getting other organizations and companies to contribute to the project.) The first objective of the project are to provide training to all primary school teachers, particularly in math & science. The second will actually take more of the money, as we are renovating all primary schools in Macedonia to be compliant with Green Building Standards. Given that Macedonia experiences cold winters and hot summers, that means our renovations will pay off for years into the future with lower energy costs for heating and cooling. While on my trip I was working to get the office up and running and hire staff to implement this great project.

The second project I was working on is called the dot-ORG Macedonia Connects project. This project is in the final year and has been success at making Macedonia the first wireless country in the world. We worked with the local government to break up local monopolies & create competitiveness in the market. Now all citizens in Macedonia can set up a wireless account for about $15 a month. This was done by building off of a huge ‘computer dump’ by the Chinese, and then connecting 460 schools across the country to create a wireless web of connectivity.

A digression from our usual finance topics, but now you know a bit more of what your tax dollars are working for overseas.

Enjoy!

Bonus!

I thought I’d share one way to make some extra work: become a work-o-holic!

I just received an Innovations Award from my office for my participation in the project that I just started up in Macedonia. Along with the recognition came a $750 bonus. Granted the feds got their cut, not a bad little bonus around the holidays.

Looking forward my raise around the corner as well!

1 Oz Silver Bullion for $1.95

In case you’re interested, the money hustler blog seems to have come across a truly good deal. Apparently some company is offering you a chance to get a free 1 oz silver American eagle. All you need to do is call a 1-800 number and listen to about 10 minutes worth of sales pitches to get your coin. The shipping and handling costs are $1.95, you’ll need to pay that.

I think the deal is legit, you’ll probably get the silver for $1.95. But they ask for your telephone and address info so you’ll definitely get on their mailing list. The company will likely sell your information also. Frugal for life and the Mighty Bargain Hunter have signed up for the deal, so you might check out their blogs for more info.

Good luck!

Financial Education for Kids

In the personal finance blogsphere we talk a lot about investing and saving money. However, one thing we don’t discuss is the proper policy for educating children about personal finance. Accordingly, todays posting is a video from the New America Foundation on precisely this topic.

Again, the video is a bit long, so as usual I recommend that you minimize your browser and play the video in the background.

Also, to round things out, we’re including a link to Assetbuilding.org. Assetbuilding.org is a website, again from the New America Foundation, with links to policy papers and economic data. if you want tips on saving money, its probably not the place to go. But if you want solid economic data and analysis about consumer finance, its a good spot to check out.

Yet More Global Wealth Accumulation

Rolling out of bed this morning, I turned on the computer and was greeted with the New York Times latest story on wealth accumulation. Apparently a new UN report has found that the richest 1 percent of the globe owns about 40% of the worlds net-worth. Since you’re probably busy, I’ll quickly recap:

The top wealthiest countries are Japan, the United States, Luxembourg and Switzerland. Interestingly, the report’s authors actually say there is LESS inequality today than in 2000.
If China and India had not industrialized, the inequality index would have been higher.

Finally, the report suggests that some of the inequality is due to barriers in developing countries. This includes unclear property rights and undeveloped capital markets. In contrast, developed countries have created mechanisms for wealth accumulation such as 401k plans and have generally open financial markets.

The actual report is here, but you might want to wait a while. With all the media coverage the UN’s website is being overloaded (Kind of the like the DINKS on a good day…well, okay…not really).

Defense Nominee Gates has a LOT of Money

Just saw this piece via Wonkette. Evidently the financial disclosure forms for the new secretary of defense, Robert Gates, are floating around the internet. Its interesting reading. Gates has done quite well for himself and holds large blocks of stock in the companies he advises. Not only that, he’s earned more than $140,000 from speaking engagements and has been paid more than a $750,000 as president of Texas A&M university.

The story is at Muckraker.com.
