Couples and Conflict

Things aren’t always milk and honey for married couples. To illustrate this point, I just stumbled across a posting by Paul over at Priceplus. Apparently his wife and he have a serious disagreement about spending and credit card debt. So serious in fact they’ve started hiding money and lying to each other.

While I’m NOT an expert by any means, feel free to check out Paul’s blog, maybe you can offer some helpful advice.

To be entirely frank, Miel and I have had our fare share of disagreements about money. In fact, we had a couple of hairy conversations regarding our prenup and more recently have clashed a bit over paying for grad school.

That said, Miel is really a wonderful wife and partner, so none of our disagreements have been all that bad. In fact, Miel has some good things to say about dealing with martial financial conflict and she’s good at putting them into practice. I recommend you take a look at her post on fighting fair.

Happiness and harmony to all!

Best,

James

Revaluating Our School Funding Plan

A few days ago, we blogged about our plans to reallocate our assets to raise money for school. Part of this plan involved putting a large chunk of cash into prosper.com. Ultimately, and I feel a bit sheepish to say it, my mother talked me out of it. For what its worth, my mom retired with a very high net net worth to Hawaii, so I trust what she has to say. The reasoning is essentially that, while popular, prosper is still too new to risk large sums of capital in.

So, at this point, I’m brainstorming to see how I can turn $70,000 into a thousand dollars of income per month. Right now, I’m thinking about Canadian energy trusts or preferred stocks.

Stay tuned, I’ll keep you updated when a good solution presents itself.

Best,

James

Going Nowhere: Our September Net Worth

Since its the start of October, its time to review our net worth for September. Last month brought some good and bad news for us DINKS. The good news is that we didn’t loose any money. The bad news is our wealth is flat relative to where it was several months ago. In April of this year, our net worth was around $304,000. Its roughly the same amount now.

By way of a quick analysis, we had gains in Miel’s retirement and the value of our personal residence increased (yes, even in this market). On the other hand, we took some looses due to increased student loans and declines in our stock portfolio. The stock losses being due to my silly daytrading.

As you’ve probably gathered, Miel and I have some disagreement about this situation. Stay tuned for further details.

Check out our September net worth below.

Couples Financial Debates

Money issues are bound to come up in any committed relationship. Whether you don’t have enough to make ends meet, or you are trying to determine how best to allocate your phat bonus, debates will inevitably arise.

The more James & I learn to live with each other financially, the more we will still need to learn. While we certainly don’t have it down to a science yet, I thought out readers might find some of the tools we try to use helpful:

  • Treat each other with respect and try to consider how they see the situation;
  • Tread lightly on each other’s spending habits, as these can be touchy;
  • Try to prepare in advance by ironing out possible issues before they arise as a problem;
  • Don’t start a $ debate when either of you are hungry or already in a bad mood;
  • Play nice and fair, like in the sand box of kindergarten;
  • Sharing feels good, but it helps when it goes both ways;
  • Remember what brought you together;
  • This too shall pass.

Good night!

Miel
