Guest Post: 15 Little Ways to Save Money Throughout the Week
This is the perfect time to start tightening your belt. Not only is the economy still struggling, summer is here and many of us would like to take a vacation in the next few months. If you are left with too little after paying your bills, perhaps you need to start focusing on little ways to save money. Add all of these frugal habits together and you will actually save quite a bit of money throughout the week.
- Switch from name brand groceries to store brand.
- Pack all lunches for school / work.
- Join a carpool. This helps the environment and your budget.
- Turn off all lights as soon as you leave a room.
- Water the lawn at night, as evaporation from the sun will waste water.
- Set your lawnmower to cut the grass as short as possible.
- Keep your showers brief.
- Consider hand-washing your dishes if you don't have a full load to clean.
- Save your leftovers for a second meal.
- Eat everything in your pantry before you make a new trip to the grocery store.
- Use a bicycle instead of your car for shorter trips.
- Wash your car at home, rather than a commercial car wash.
- Keep your credit cards at home.
- Save your loose change in a jar.
- Fill up your gas tank when it is cool outside.

Actually, cutting your grass so it's on the long side is better for it. The longer grass helps shade out the weeds. Cutting it short all the time will result in a dried-out, weedy lawn -- and then you'll be spending money on water and weed control. Remember to mulch the clippings, too.
I was about to post about the grass thing, but I see the person above me already has :)
A couple of urban myths in this list...
1) Gasoline tanks are underground and stay within a very constant temperature range. Therefore, it does not safe you money buying gas in the early morning when it is cool.
2) Be careful about watering at night as some plants can be damaged by mildew.
3) Water Authorities in CA urge you to keep your grass long as this prevents evaporation and requires less water. Or better yet, eliminate your lawn and xeriscape your yard.
ArtShell - Thanks for your comment.
We've managed to eliminate all of these concerns, as we don't have a car, a lawn, or outdoor plants. I guess that's another way to go about it!
Certainly doesn't work for everyone, but you do eliminate lots of cost issues with 600 sq ft, no car, no land line, and no TV!
Cheers,
Miel
